Mirror to the World and new band stuff

March 18, 2009

I’m currently exhibiting my 24 on 14th work in a new group show called ‘Mirror to the World’. The show kicked off last weekend and was a big success – the opening night was alot of fun and saw about 60 or photography lovers decending on Glen Echo Photoworks in Maryland.

This was the 2nd exhibit of 24 on 14th – this time I showed 12 of my favourite images unframed and mounted behind plexiglass. I was really pleased with the job that Image Impact in Rockville did on the mounting and would definitely recommend them to anyone.  True to the form of 24 on 14th, it was ‘featured’ in the Washinton Post for the 2nd time in a row!  the first being during it’s first showing at Artomatic last year. It was also mentioned on Washington DC’s local National Public Radio station WAMU’s ArtBeat one morning. Here is the (albeit small) feature from the Post:

Also last weekend I was in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware and was at the Dogfish Head Brewpub on the friday night – for some reason (probably the fact that knew we were all going to get a bit drunk – it was my birthday) i didn’t take my camera – anyway 2 great bands played that night and I managed to borrow my friend Damien’s Nikon D40 and shoot the main act  – The Fleshtones, a legendary New York outfit who first played CGBGs in the late 70s and have been playing ever since. They are ‘getting on a bit’ (I can talk) but they totally rocked the place down – it was a fantastic performance and somehow (despite the lashings of amazing fresh very strong local beer) I managed to get some reasonable stuff – a real testemant to the D40 and it’s basic kit lens (18-55mm).

You can see the rest of the Fleshtones stuff on flickr

A Busy end to 2008…

January 7, 2009

zoe-coverDecember 2008 was a very busy month for me. Especially considering that the previous months were pretty dead.

I finally delivered 7 copies of a photo book of the lovely wee Zoe.

I’m going to do 2 more this month (January 2009) and try and build upon that work. It was great fun shooting, editing and designing the book with my client’s Sarah and her husband Jollian. They both loved the book and could not wait until Xmas day to give the book to various members of their family.

Click on the image above to preview the book.

Next I did a big corporate job for Streetwise Partners – a corporate mentoring organization based in New York and Washington DC. I shot their 2008 Graduation Ceremony at White and Chase LLP. It was a really enjoyable event and I met a whole bunch of great people.

After that I did another job for a former client of mine who I met through by DC Dogs (DogCity) connections. I shot a group at Shirlington Dog Park in Alexandria, Virginia. Again this was alot of fun, especially chasing 4 or 5 pugs/frenchies around in the mud!

I.’ve started working on those 2 baby/kid photo books I mentioned. One is for my friends Ian and Kirsten of their son John. The other book is for my cousin Gillian and her husband Martin – this time it’s of their kids Ewan and Katie.

Paul Michel at the Black Cat

October 22, 2008

After attending a fund raiser for Streetwise Partners last Thursday I stumbled along drunk to the Black Cat to photograph (and watch) local DC musician Paul Michel and his band. It was a great performance and despite the endless aloe martini’s and Hook and Ladder beers on tap at the Streetwise thing, I did manage to get some reasonable stuff…

For their gig at the Rock and Roll Hotel in Washington DC I shot in color with 2 Nikon Digital SLRs as well as in black and white with a Nikon film SLR (FM-3a).

You can view the b&w shots here on flickr.

Here is a scanned 35mm shot from the film stuff…

new stuff from Glacier National Park

July 24, 2008

I just uploaded some new images taken from my recent trip to Glacier National Park in Montana. It was an amazing place and i really felt refreshed after my 2 weeks away from work.

You can view the images here on flickr.

All images were shot with a Holga – a plastic ($30) ‘toy’ camera from China that takes medium format film.

Here’s one of my friend Billy…

No more “24 on 14th” but THANKS to everyone

June 16, 2008

Unfortunately Artomatic 2008 is now over :(

THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO LEFT A COMMENT IN MY GUESTBOOK OR EMAILED ME. I LEAVE FOR VACATION TODAY SO I WILL SORT OUT PRINTS AND CONTACT EVERYONE WHEN I GET BACK AT THE START OF JULY.

I had a fantastic time and met an incredible amount of good people. Thanks to everyone who came along to Artomatic and saw “24 on 14th” and especially all those people you wrote such nice things in my guest book – i’m going to publish these shortly.

Special thanks go to the following people:

Ryan - for the HUGE support and help with the installation, the wonderful video/featurette, his multiple appearances on the day plus lots of other stuff…

Misha - again her tireless support and her amazing spreadsheet that modelled the entire 24 on 14th wall in miniature so that i could actually work out in advance where to hang EVERYTHING

Jodi - for editing my “24 on 14th” artist statement and coming along with Misha at 4am to keep me company , safe and AWAKE!

All my friends – Bambi, Paul, Doug, Abbi, Tara, Peter, Denyse, Damian, Britta, Gareth, Matt, Justin for their support as always including some much appreciated appearances that day.

Judy Goodman for coming up with the perfect name “24 on 14th” and for her portrait work for Suds and Silver.

Frank Van Riper for his expert advice as always, his never ending enthusiasm for all things photographic, his “get out of jail free” lettter (luckily not required) and again for his portrait work for Suds and Silver.

The Suds and Silver “Artomatic All Stars” – Stuart, Andy and Paul – a great turnout from the S&S gang.

The remaining Suds and Silver gang – Praveen, Dan, Steve, Tara, Bill, Patrick, Erica, Chris and Shannon

And, of course, everyone that I photographed for the project – without you all I would have had would have been a BIG EMPTY YELLOW WALL!

If I’ve missed anyone I’m really sorry!!!
